When you use a hammer, you are accelerating the hammer in an arc, in such a way that you are increasing the speed and changing the direction.
But to do that you are applying a force of a constant ’size’. Just as gravity is a constant force but things fall faster and faster, your constant force causes the hammer to accelerate: to move faster and faster.
